Somewhere in China

Their strength lay in their unity. It had been so all their lives. Lie Mei and Xue Tao were brothers, and since they were little, their connection with each other had been exceptional. Their mother had passed away before they turned one, and with no other relatives to care for them, they were placed in an orphanage. It had been a difficult time. Initially, they had each other, as they were placed in the same orphanage. But after a few years, in an attempt to increase their chances of being adopted, they were separated, with Xue being moved to another orphanage hundreds of kilometers away from his brother. It had been a terrible time. Both had been nearly inconsolable when forced to be apart.

Days turned into weeks, which turned into months. The staff at the orphanages kept in touch, and initially, they tried every possible method to calm the separated brothers. But all attempts had been fruitless. The only result was that they were given strong sedatives, which helped for a few hours. When the medication wore off, they were back to the same behavior. Xue later explained to the staff that it had felt like half his body had been torn away. After a few months, the staff at both orphanages gave up, and Xue and Lie were reunited. That was a little more than twenty years ago.

Xue looked up from the map on the large screen on his lap. In front of him stretched the endless highway. They had been on the road for nearly eleven hours and were approaching their destination.

"What are you thinking?"

Lie, who was driving the black BMW, furrowed his brow.

"With some luck, we'll get there before it gets dark. If we can get close enough, we can park the car a bit away and then approach under the cover of darkness."

Xue nodded while swiping to a new image on the screen in his lap. An image of a desolate area at the edge of a mountain appeared on the screen. The picture was taken by a satellite, and Xue used his fingers to zoom in.

"Yes. If the gods will it, that's what we'll do. According to the information we have, the target is in a house far out in the countryside."

Lie licked his lips.

"It'll be an easy job. What was the target's name again?"

Xue pulled up a small information box on the screen.

"Fang-Lie. He's there in the house with his family. They're probably waiting to be picked up by an external party. With some luck, we'll get there first."

"And we were also supposed to retrieve some medicine?"

"Yes, it's apparently an experimental variant of N5 that this Fang-Lie has developed."

"Okay."

Their continued journey was silent, and the powerful engine of the BMW made their trip a sheer delight. This part of China was not as densely populated as others, allowing the German engineering of the car to truly shine.

Lie pressed a bit harder on the gas pedal. The speedometer climbed past one hundred and twenty, then slowly up towards one hundred and forty.
